In need for continual care, his family member was placed in a nursing home. Tom now specializes in long term care insurance. He is an active member of organizations such as the Park Nicollet Successful Aging Initiative. Tom also participates in community events and fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Association. Tom brings to us over 16 years of experience focused on long term care planning. He brings his clients a wealth of experience from his time as a representative for Newman Long Term Care and the Genworth Financial and AARP plans. |
Doug Wanous, CLTC
Long Term Care Insurance Specialist As a successful high school teacher and coach at Owatonna High School for over 30 years, Doug understands educators' unique joys and challenges. His personal experience with retirement planning, college financial planning, and family trusts allows Doug to support others looking for financial advice. In addition to being a financial advisor, Doug is passionate about his career as a long term care insurance specialist and has experienced first-hand the financial and emotional challenges of navigating the complex long-term care industry. When he became his mother-in-law's Power of Attorney in 2016, he was introduced to the challenges of an elderly couple who did not adequately plan for long-term care. At that time, his step-father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer; his mother-in-law became ill from the stress of being his primary caregiver. This stress exacerbated her early onset dementia; unfortunately, the expense of home health care became an irreparable issue that blocked the necessary care, causing the fracture of this blended family. When his mother-in-law's family took over her care, Doug witnessed the strain caregiving has on the caregivers--in this case, her adult children and their families. Furthermore, without long-term care insurance, Doug's mother-in-law has watched her life-long nest egg dwindle due to the expenses of a quality memory care facility--resulting in a seemingly imminent move to a Medicaid facility. Doug's mother-in-law's blended family was fractured without proper planning, her children and grandchildren experienced the stress and conflicts of caregiving, and her life-long nest egg is rapidly depleting. Because of this experience, Doug is committed to helping others avoid the pain and hardships due to a lack of planning and preparation. Doug holds the Series 6, 63 and 65 licenses and is a Minnesota Licensed Insurance Producer and CLTC© (Certified Long-Term Care) distinction. Doug currently lives in Owatonna with his wife, Katie. Their two children (Luke and Millie) graduated from Augustana University--Sioux Falls, SD. They both live in Sioux Falls and are working in the healthcare industry. |
